Vermont: Beyond the Green Mountains

Nearly 80 percent of Vermont is covered by forest. Wander anywhere through the Green Mountain State and you’ll find pure New England treasures: gorgeous countryside, thriving small towns, dairy and cheese farms, village greens and more than 100 famous covered bridges. Outdoor enthusiasts are never bored in this four-season playground: hiking, biking and canoeing happen everywhere. Vermont has the best skiing in the eastern US; bring your equipment on Amtrak and hit the famous slopes. The Ethan Allen Express goes up the west side of this small state, making several stops, including in the sophisticated town of Middlebury before depositing visitors at historic Union Station in Burlington. This funky three-college town, perched on the shores of Lake Champlain, is centered around the Church Street Marketplace, a bustling pedestrian mall with funky shops, outdoor cafés serving up farm-to-table feasts and seemingly an endless stream of street performers.
