Upon arrival, walk the charming Main Street, sticking your head into various clothing, outdoor gear and souvenir shops. To fuel up for your afternoon adventures, try lunch at Big Mountain Deli and Creperie a spot that honors the Adirondack’s 46 high peaks by serving up 46 specialty sandwiches. Or try the Big Slide Brewery and Public House, with award-winning beers and artfully-prepared comfort food.

Now it’s time to pay homage to the town’s amazing Olympic history. The only place to ever host the Winter Olympics twice (1932 and 1980). Various venues around town let you relive the glory. The small but mighty Lake Placid Olympic Museum is in the building where the 1980 “Miracle On Ice” USA v. USSR historic hockey game was held. You can take a sky ride experience at the Olympic Jumping Complex and ride a bobsled, which zooms up to 50 miles per hour. (Don’t worry they provide a professional brakeman and driver). Whiteface Mountain, with the biggest vertical drop on the East Coast, offers world-class skiing in the winter and hiking (after June 30) in the summer.

Where to Stay in Lake Placid

You’ll want to relax for a bit after checking into the Mirror Lake Inn Resort & Spa. This four-star hotel has its own beach on Mirror Lake as well as every pampering pleasure you can imagine.

Dining in Lake Placid

There’s an incredible amount of riches when choosing where to have dinner in Lake Placid. Many think it is worth leaving Main Street for the romantic, chef-owned Salt of the Earth Bistro or Top of the Park to sample tapas (regulars swoon over the mushroom cappuccino) and sip on specialty cocktails with a stunning view.

Before Heading Out

In the morning, you may run or walk around the 2.6-mile, paved Mirror Lake Loop, keeping your eyes open for a wide variety of birds. After eating at the beloved Breakfast Club, etc, with its pretty lake views, you’ll want to go for a drive. There are several scenic byways, but don’t miss out on the Whiteface Veterans’ Memorial Highway (from mid-May to October only). There’s a charge for each passenger in the car, but the inspiring, one-of-a-kind views are worth every penny.
