Miss New York Enjoys a Winter Wonderland in Saratoga Springs
Miss New York, Abigail Quammen enjoyed the glittering, snow covered streets of Saratoga Springs.

When winter sets in, there’s no place quite like Saratoga Springs. From charming streets to world-class cuisine and historic treasures, this magical town has something for everyone. My visit was packed with unforgettable moments, and I left with both my heart and stomach full. I felt renewed with bags overflowing with local treasures.

Here’s a look at my incredible trip—and why Saratoga Springs should be on your must-visit list this winter.

Day 1

Arrival in Saratoga Springs

An easy trip on Amtrak from Moynihan Train Hall in New York city meant arriving in Saratoga Springs just after lunchtime, greeted by crisp winter air, snow on the ground and a warm sense of community. My home for the trip was the Hampton Inn & Suites, ideally situated in the heart of town and a quick ride from Saratoga Springs Station. Most attractions are within walking distance, making the Hampton Inn & Suites the perfect place to be. The staff welcomed me like family, and the cozy room was the perfect home base at the end of each day.

After settling in, I headed to Bright Sighted Media for a video interview as part of Discover Saratoga’s new podcast! We delved into my role as Miss New York, the incredible people I’ve met throughout the state of New York, and the exciting plans I had for my time in Saratoga. Be sure to tune in when the podcast launches in the new year—it’s a celebration of all the things that make Saratoga extraordinary!

Miss New York meeting Santa at the Victorian Streetwalk

The evening brought the highlight of the day: the Victorian Streetwalk. This annual event, fabulously hosted by the Saratoga Springs Downtown Business Association, transforms Broadway into a winter wonderland. Snowflakes danced in the air as the street came alive with holiday lights, festive music, and performers. I had the honor of emceeing the event, introducing incredible local talent, including Class Act Dance, Saratoga’s only competitive dance troupe. Their energy and skill left me in awe. I even got to visit with Santa as he made a stop on Broadway to welcome the Christmas season!

In the heart of Saratoga, a group of people, many wearing Santa hats with colorful lights, gather outdoors at night. Snow blankets the ground as a person in the center wears a crown, surrounded by others smiling for a festive photo.
Enjoying the holiday spirit with the Saratoga Springs community

After the festivities, I popped into Hamlet & Ghost, a chic yet cozy eatery where I had one of the best cheeseburgers I’ve ever had, paired with their duck fat fries. It was the perfect meal to warm up after a magical evening. I’ll be dreaming about this one for a while!

Day 2

Ready for a delicious breakfast at The Merc

The next morning, I started my day with brunch at The Merc. This Saratoga staple offers comfort food with a twist, and their biscuits and gravy were out of this world. The breakfast potatoes were perfectly crispy and we couldn’t resist ordering a stack of pancakes for the table.

A Saratoga breakfast spread features pancakes dusted with powdered sugar, served with butter and syrup. Alongside are scrambled eggs, sausage, roasted potatoes, and toast, all complemented by a glass of orange juice and a frothy coffee.

Fueled and ready for adventure, I made my way to Saratoga Spa State Park, a winter haven with endless outdoor activities. The park boasts 12 miles of trails for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing, a scenic ice-skating rink, and the iconic mineral springs. We took a tour of the springs, led by Ken Chaisson, which brought the history and science of the springs to life. Ken’s knowledge and storytelling made the experience both educational and entertaining. This is a must for all science and history buffs.

Pro tip: If you’re a dog lover, you’re in for a treat—there are so many dogs strolling through the park with their owners. It’s a great place to make some new furry friends (don’t worry, they’re all leashed and well-behaved)!

Next, I indulged in some much-needed relaxation at the Roosevelt Baths & Spa. Established in 1935, this historic spa is a treasure of Saratoga Springs. I soaked in the naturally effervescent mineral waters during a 40-minute bath, and it was nothing short of magical. The calming atmosphere and therapeutic benefits left me feeling rejuvenated.

Heading in for a delicious dinner at Hattie's

Dinner that evening was at the legendary Hattie’s Restaurant, known for its Southern-inspired comfort food and warm hospitality. Their famous fried chicken paired with sweet tea hit all the right notes. The meal was a delicious reminder of why Hattie’s has been a Saratoga institution since 1938.

A table with plates of food: a dish of Saratoga-style baked macaroni and cheese topped with green onions, a plate of mashed potatoes, green beans, and fried chicken, and a bowl of red stew. A glass of iced tea with a lemon slice is also present.

The night ended on a high note at Caffe Lena, the oldest continually operating folk music venue in the country. SIRSY, the “little band with a big sound,” took the stage, delivering a high-energy performance that captivated the audience. I left with a new favorite band, some cool merch, and a deep appreciation for the vibrant arts scene in Saratoga Springs.

Fun fact: Caffe Lena was the first gig Bob Dylan played outside of New York City!

Day 3

Miss New York Sweet Mimi's Cafe
A table with breakfast items: Saratoga pancakes topped with blueberries and powdered sugar, a bowl of fresh berries, toast with fried eggs, mixed fruit bowl, toasted bread, and mugs of coffee. A bottle and a small cream pitcher are also present.
Great hospitality and even better food at Sweet Mimi's

My final morning in Saratoga began at Sweet Mimi’s Cafe & Bakery, a charming spot that has earned its reputation for incredible breakfasts. Their lemon ricotta pancakes are so legendary they beat Bobby Flay—and yes, they’re absolutely worth the hype! I also enjoyed a hearty omelet, and the highlight was chatting with owner Jeannette Liebers, whose warmth and hospitality made the meal even more special. It’s not every day you leave breakfast with a full heart and a full stomach! She even sent me on my way with treats for the road.

After breakfast, I made my way to Northshire Bookstore, where I had the opportunity to do a picture book reading. There’s something magical about sitting with kids, exploring stories together and seeing their faces light up when something clicks. Wandering through the bookstore afterward was the icing on the cake—there’s nothing like finding a new book (or two) to bring home. My favorite local find from the trip has to be my new zippered canvas tote from Northshire Bookstore, beautifully embroidered with the words “book bag.” It’s the perfect blend of functional and charming, and I can’t wait to load it up with my current reads!

In the Saratoga library, a woman sits on the floor, reading a book to a toddler and small child. Theyre surrounded by bookshelves filled with colorful books. Cozy armchairs and a warm, inviting atmosphere complete the scene.

Hitting the town with my new favorite "book bag"

I closed out my trip with a tour of some of Saratoga’s beloved local shops. I started at Saratoga Tea & Honey, where I sipped on warm, fragrant blends and marveled at their unique selection of honeys sourced from around the world. It was so fun to get to taste all of their honeys in their honey room. I ended up going home with the orange blossom flavor.

Various jars of Saratoga honey are displayed on a wooden table, accompanied by honey dippers. A small chalkboard sign reads Varietal Honey beside the baskets. A vibrant painting on the wall adds color to the rustic setting.

My shopping spree continued at Impressions of Saratoga and Dark Horse Mercantile, two charming boutiques brimming with unique gifts, Saratoga-themed treasures, and cozy apparel.
