The VIA Aquarium in Schenectady is bursting with wildlife, but located in a spot you wouldn’t expect.
The aquarium sits inside the VIA-Port Rotterdam Mall and has over thirty exhibits. Some of these include a stingray petting station, a reptile area and numerous walk through tunnels where guests can see fish and sharks swimming all around them.
the 25,000 square-foot space holds over 2,000 species of sea creatures, so there is no shortage of animals to see. They also offer stingray feedings, behind the scenes tours and put on shows.
The aquarium has a few initiatives for people of all ages to get them involved in conservation efforts within their own communities. Encouraging recycling, using sustainable products and partnering with local organizations to fundraise, they are driven to help the community grow and be more aware of the impact they make on the Earth.
Their website lists a few resources to some of their global conservation partners. Links to organizations that are geared towards coral reef preservation, captive breeding and release programs and sustainable seafood are just a few of the efforts they support.
VIA Aquarium offers birthday parties and sleepovers for children. These events allow for ample time to explore the various exhibits of the aquarium and interact with the animals on a deeper level. Sleepovers showcase movies in the theater located in the building and guests sleep in front of exhibits.
Tickets to enter the aquarium are very affordable, with an adult ticket (age 18 and older) running under 20 dollars. Children under age four get in for free.
The Aquarium is open daily from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Stingray feedings are daily at 12 p.m. and 4 p.m. Reptile experiences are Monday, Thursday, and Friday at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m., and Saturdays at 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.
