Founded in 1856 by Charles F. Orvis in Manchester, Vermont, the Orvis Company specializes in gear and apparel for such outdoor activities and also supports dog lovers with a wide range of products. Orvis does more than just supplying customers with what they need, they also share their expertise through instructional classes, dog training and travel opportunities. In addition, The Orvis Company believes in protecting the environment as well as supporting communities in which it operates, giving 5% of its pre-tax profits to protecting nature, advancing canine health and well-being and other initiatives.
Flagship Store and Schools
The Flagship store in Manchester, Vermont is a beautifully constructed and spacious building with all the latest goods from Orvis. Visitors can enjoy the casting pond right outside the store. Behind the store is the Orvis Rod Shop & Factory where the American-made rods are tested. Each weekday at 10 a.m. visitors can partake in a guided tour of the factory. Across from the store is the Orvis Fly Fishing School, and a few minutes away is the Orvis Wingshooting School which both offer one and two-day programs taught by experts for both beginners and those with more experience.
The Orvis Company’s Flagship store is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday to Saturday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday.
Online Classes
In addition to in-person opportunities, Orvis offers free virtual classes. Two of these series of classes include Fly Tying 101 and Fly Fishing 101. In Virtual Fly Tying 101, acclaimed fly-fishing mentor Tom Rosenbauer will demonstrate a new pattern from start to finish each week. In Fly Fishing 101, students will learn about fly casting, rigging, fly selection, and anything else they will need to know to get started. Even if interested parties are not available to make the classes live online, they can view the recording after the classes are over.
