The Hyde Collection History
The Hyde Collection opened as a museum in 1963. Museum founders Louis and Charlotte Hyde acquired the majority of the objects during a fifty-year period of avid and highly informed collecting. Many of these works are displayed in Hyde House, their former home. Louis Hyde passed away in 1934, but Charlotte Hyde tripled their collection over the next 30 years, adding more modern pieces by artists like Degas, Picasso, Renoir, and van Gogh. In 1952, she established a public trust and bequeathed her collection and her home to the community for the purpose of creating a museum.
