Paramount Hudson Valley Theater
The Paramount Theater is a landmark in the Hudson Valley. Situated in Peekskill, New York, this theater strives to bring accessible and professional arts programming in everything from theater, film, music, and fine arts to the Hudson Valley. Established in 2013 as a not-for-profit organization, the Paramount Hudson Valley Arts brings arts education programs to the diverse and underserved Peekskill and northern Westchester County communities.
The PHVA sponsors programs in theater, dance, music, fine arts, storytelling, poetry readings, and other cultural activities. They also run a variety of workshops, master classes, and lectures. PHVA works to bring works to the stage that celebrate Peekskill’s rich culture and history including Black History Month programs, Shakespeare residencies, a Hispanic Heritage Month festival, and an annual Film Convention.
A Landmark’s History
The Paramount Hudson Valley Theater first opened its doors in June of 1930, originally as a quaint 1500-seat movie palace for Publix Pictures of Paramount Pictures. Upon its opening, the Paramount Theater immediately stuck out as a premiere facility in the region.
The theater was opened with an overture by the Paramount Symphony Orchestra, and The Big Pond starring Maurice Chevalier and Claudette Colbert.
Persisting through the Depression and World War II, the Paramount ultimately faced issues with the birth of the shopping mall and the television. Paramount sold the building in 1973 and was acquired by the city in 1977 due to a tax default.
Things changed in 2006 when a $1 million grant was given to restore this landmark theater to its original glory.
Now, under the operations of the PHVA, the Paramount Hudson Valley Theater thrives as a destination for the best of live music and performances.
