JMA Wireless Dome
Home to the Syracuse Orange football, basketball, and lacrosse teams, the JMA Wireless Dome in Syracuse, New York has welcomed more than 18 million people through its doors. Located on the campus of Syracuse University, this massive dome has been open since 1980, originally as the Carrier Dome until a few years ago. When JMA Wireless announced their holding of the dome’s naming rights, it was the first time this stadium has seen a new name since its opening.
This dome has seen the Syracuse men’s basketball team to the NCAA with the highest total home court attendance in a season and the largest gome court single-game attendance in 2910 when the team played against Duke.
The JMA Wireless Dome is the largest domed stadium of any college campus, across the northeastern United States, and the largest on-campus basketball arena in the nation with its capacity being 35,642 attendees!
History of the JMA Wireless Dome
At the end of the 1970s, Syracuse University was facing pressure to update and improve its football facilities in order to remain a Division-1-A football school. Archbold Stadium, the school’s original stadium, had been operating since 1907 and had surely seen better days and was unable to be expanded. It was decided a new stadium would be built on the grounds where Archbold stood and it would have to have a domed roof, considering the area’s weather.
Opened in September of 1980, the JMA Wireless Dome was nicknamed the “Loud House” as the original inflatable roof caused incredible echoes within.
Over the past 25 years, the Dome has been upgraded and renovated several times. In 1999, said inflatable roof was replaced with a fixed roof to decrease the loudness inside. It has seen paint, banners, historic photographs, improved LED displays, and end zone video displays.
Events at the Dome
Over the years, the JMA Wireless Dome has not only seen record-breaking college sporting events, but a variety of performing artists have graced the stadium. Performers include the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Paul McCartney, Prince, David Bowie, Bon Jovi, Elton John, Billy Joel, Bruce Springsteen, Frank Sinatra, the Who, Kanye West, Kenny Chesney, Taylor Swift, Grateful Dead, and many more.
Beyond concerts, the Dome has seen plenty of events. Each October it hosts the New York State Field Band Conference marching band championships. The WWE has held a variety of wrestling events, Monster Jam stops by on its tour schedule, NBA Preseason games have taken place, AHL games, and much more.
