Apparently, the idea for the iconic rink came from a Depression-era skate salesman who demonstrated his product by skating on the frozen water of the Rockefeller Center fountain. The sunken plaza the rink would be located in struggled to attract shoppers due to its odd location and soon it was decided something else needed to fill the space.
On Christmas Day, 1936, the rink officially opened – originally as a temporary exhibit for the holidays. However, it became so popular that it was made a permanent fixture. On the day it premiered, there were two Rockefeller Christmas Trees acting as a backdrop.
The rink has become a staple in winter culture, with an incredible number of movies and shows filming at the spot – making it recognizable around the world. From Elf to Home Alone 2: Lost in New York to Marvel’s Hawkeye hosting an epic battle scene in the rink – this spot is not short of celebrity action.
The Rink is located at Rockefeller Plaza between 50th and 49th Streets. The main entrance is located on 49th Street between 5th and 6th Avenue. For directions, click the button below.
