New York Orchid Show
The New York Orchid Show is a yearly exhibit at the New York Botanical Garden.
What is the New York Orchid Show?
The New York Orchid Show is an annual exhibit at the New York Botanical Garden (NYBG) highlighting all things orchids. This beautiful event has been running for over two decades, and each year it seems to grow more. This exhibit seeks to teach visitors all about these incredible plants with various learning opportunities as well as tons of fun events to celebrate their beauty.
Each year the Orchid Show has a unique theme that presents the flowers in a unique way. This year’s theme is Mexican Modernism.
What to Expect at the New York Orchid Show
Stunning displays of orchids in all colors and sizes will be spread throughout the Enid A. Haupt Conservatory. As you travel through the conservatory you’ll be treated to lush landscapes filled with vivid collections of flowers bringing to life culture and unique ecosystems. With this year’s theme, cultural tradition and contemporary artistry will meet in a stunning fashion through the floral displays.
Arguably one of the most fascinating flowers, the orchid will be shown in ways unlike any other. Art and architectural structures will compliment the unique style of the flower throughout the conservatory.
Beyond the exhibit, there are several complimentary events for the Orchid Show.
Orchid Nights are a fun way to experience what’s been called “the lushest bar in town!” For those 21 and older you can view the stunning exhibit at night as well as dance the night away to the sounds of nightlife in Mexico City. Featured will be DJ hellotones “El Hijo de PueblaYork” spinning vibrant Mexican Cumbia music, professional dancers dancing along and an overall celebration of traditional meets modern. This fun event takes place select nights throughout the running of the exhibit from 7 – 10 pm. Buy tickets here.
A variety of Educational Programs are available from orchid experts throughout the run of the exhibit. On weekends and select Wednesdays, enjoy Orchid Basics Q & A to learn all about caring for your own plants. Meet the Orchid Experts behind the impressive collection and learn how the fantastic show was cultivated. A Sensory Table will be available select weekends through April 26 where you can identify the plants behind some of the most common scents and smells — chocolate, vanilla and cinnamon. On February 23 and April 6 and 27, enjoy Orchids of the Herbarium where you can learn how orchid specimens are collected, preserved, mounted and categorized with the Assistant Director of the Herbarium — Nicole Tarnowsky. Learn more about all four of these programs here.
The Orchid Show Theme
This year’s theme Mexican Modernism carries you into the vibrant and tropical locale of Mexico without having to leave the Bronx. The bright arrangements of orchids are inspired by Mexican modernist Luis Barragán, known for his bold, multicolored designs. Complimenting the florals will be fountain features and colorful walls with lattice decoration. To go along with the Mexico native plants, throughout the exhibit you’ll see other supporting plants such as cacti and agave.
