Spanning more than six million acres, the Adirondack Park is home to the largest protected natural area in the contiguous US. Luckily, Amtrak’s Adirondack line, dubbed one of the world’s most scenic train rides by National Geographic, runs from Manhattan 372 miles north to Montréal. There are multiple stops along the way, of course, some remote (Westport) and some in scenic cities (Glens Falls). Plan an outdoor adventure—think: hiking, fishing, kayaking—as there are no fewer than 46 high peaks, mountain lakes and pristine forests to explore. Don’t miss Ausable Chasm, the “Grand Canyon of the East.” Bring your skis on board the train and hit the slopes at Whiteface or Gore Mountains. Visit the legendary Olympic Village in charming Lake Placid. Tour historic Fort Ticonderoga, an important 18th century military installment on Lake Champlain. When you long for a bit of culture and good beer, hit the college town of Plattsburgh.
Charlie’s Bar & Kitchen, the proud recipient of a recent five-star review on Trip Advisor, is also a great option in scenic Lake George for its surroundings giving it a luxe ‘beautiful home’ setting.
Frederick’s Restaurant in Bolton’s Landing is pure coziness: multiple fireplaces and the raw bar not to mention live music on the patio in the summers.
Well, you couldn’t do much better—and more scenic—than Mirror Lake Inn Resort & Spa in Lake Placid. Wide open spaces and fresh mountain air? Yes, please.
Check out Adirondack Railbike Adventures. Multiple rides are offered; take the six-mile River Run alongside the Moose River to get your feet wet with fun contraptions that run along the old rails.
