Lake George Area, A Love Story
As Miss New York, I have the incredible opportunity to promote the beautiful destinations of our state, and my recent trip to Lake George Area was nothing short of spectacular. Partnering with New York By Rail, I set out to showcase just how accessible and enjoyable it is to travel from the hustle and bustle of New York City to the serene and picturesque Lake George Area. Keep reading for a detailed account of my adventure, filled with scenic views, thrilling activities and delightful encounters.
My journey began at Moynihan Train Hall, where I boarded the Amtrak train to the Albany-Rensselaer station. The ride was incredibly smooth and convenient, reaffirming my love for rail travel. There’s something magical about watching the scenery change from Manhattan’s urban landscape to the rolling hills of Upstate New York. In just two hours, I arrived just outside Albany, refreshed and ready to embark on the next leg of my trip.
Upon arriving, I was warmly greeted by Heather Bagshaw, one of my amazing tour guides for the weekend. Heather drove me to Queensbury, a charming town that served as the perfect introduction to the region. Our first stop was Lox of Bagels & Moor, where I savored a delicious sandwich that hit the spot. For dessert, we headed to the beloved Martha’s Dandee Creme Ice Cream. I opted for a kiddie-sized orange twist, which turned out to be generously portioned and incredibly flavorful. The atmosphere at Martha’s was lively and welcoming, clearly a favorite among locals and visitors alike. It was a delightful start to my Lake George adventure.
Next, I headed to Six Flags Great Escape, celebrating it’s 70th Year, conveniently located right across the street from Martha’s. It was an afternoon filled with fun and excitement. I had the pleasure of meeting and greeting fellow New Yorkers, as well as visitors from Canada and Vermont. We bonded over the shared thrill of the park. I rode two of the park’s most popular wooden roller coasters: The Comet and The Bobcat. Both rides were exhilarating, but, I must admit, The Bobcat, new this year, became my favorite. Clutching my Miss New York sash, I screamed with excitement, feeling the rush of adrenaline as the coaster zoomed along the tracks. And yes, there’s photographic evidence to capture the moment!
After an exhilarating day at Six Flags, I checked into The Queensbury Hotel, where I was graciously accommodated in a luxurious oversized suite. The room was nothing short of exquisite, and the hotel’s ambiance was a perfect blend of historic charm and modern luxury. It was one of the most relaxing evenings I’ve ever experienced, and I felt truly pampered. To top it off, the hotel left a delightful charcuterie plate and a handwritten note in my room, adding a personal touch that made me feel incredibly special. If you’re looking for a place that truly takes care of you and makes you feel like royalty, The Queensbury Hotel is the perfect choice!
Before our last meal of the day, Heather gave me a quick tour of downtown Glens Falls and I couldn’t help but appreciate several art pieces that stood out to me, specifically down an alleyway. This alleyway, unassuming at first glance, is a vibrant tapestry of small murals that beautifully depict the rich history of the area. Each mural tells a story, capturing moments and milestones that have shaped Glens Falls into the unique town it is today. The murals are a tribute to the town’s heritage, showcasing everything from its early industrial roots to its cultural landmarks. One mural that stood out vividly illustrates the women’s suffrage movement, celebrating the powerful contributions of local women who fought tirelessly for the right to vote.
Dinner that evening was at Farmacy, a delightful farm-to-table restaurant that plays an important role in supporting the local community. This style of dining emphasizes the use of fresh, locally-sourced ingredients, which not only ensures high-quality meals but also helps sustain local farmers and producers. The menu was brimming with delicious options, and we decided to sample three plates: the cheese platter, truffle croquettes and shrimp ceviche. Each dish was incredible, but the homemade jam on the cheese platter stood out, adding a unique and flavorful twist to the meal. It was a memorable culinary experience that I won’t soon forget.
The next day was packed with activities that I had been eagerly anticipating for months. I started my morning with an iced coffee from a cozy cafe in downtown Glens Falls, called SPoT Coffee (it was delicious).
We set off for Bolton Landing, where we were warmly welcomed by Tim from Bolton Boat Tours, and I couldn’t believe I was about to go cliff diving so soon! As we cruised the crystal-clear waters, I was in awe of the stunning views of the surrounding Adirondack Mountains and the picturesque shoreline dotted with beautiful mansions. Lake George is home to 170 islands, each with its own name and history. Many of these islands are available for camping, providing an idyllic retreat for nature lovers.
One of the most awe-inspiring moments was spotting a bald eagle fiercely protecting its nest and baby. Witnessing this majestic bird in its natural habitat was a powerful reminder of the lake’s thriving ecosystem.
The contrast between the Lake George’s shores was also striking. One side is lined with stately homes, reflecting the area’s charm and hospitality, while the other side is preserved as state land, showcasing a steadfast dedication to environmental protection. This balance between development and conservation makes Lake George a perfect example of sustainable tourism, where natural beauty and human enjoyment seem to coexist harmoniously.
One of the highlights of the trip was cliff diving on West Dollar Island. As we approached the desired spot, I felt a mix of excitement and nerves. There were two rocks to jump from: a medium-height rock and a taller one. I started with the medium rock, and the experience was exhilarating. The cool, clear water was refreshing, and the adrenaline rush was unmatched.
Feeling emboldened, I tackled the higher rock next, and it was even more thrilling. It was my first time cliff diving, and Lake George proved to be the perfect place for this adventurous activity.
One of the most serene spots we discovered on the lake was Paradise Bay. Tucked away from the bustling main channels, Paradise BAy offered an oasis surrounded by lush greenery and the gentle lapping of the lake against the shore. I couldn’t help but jump off the boat and spend time in the beautiful water.
After our adventure on the lake, we headed to The Sagamore Resort for lunch. The iconic hotel is stunning, with an undeniable charm that made me feel like I was in a classic movie. Fun fact: a portion of the hit television show Billions was shot there. The meal was delightful, and the setting added to the overall enchanting experience.
We then made our way to Fort William Henry, a historic hotel right on the water. The view from my bedroom was breathtaking, and the hotel’s location was perfect for exploring the area. Dinner that evening was at the hotel restaurant, where I had a delicious pork bowl. Our waitress, Juliette, was amazing and added a personal touch to the dining experience.
Fort William Henry Hotel not only boasts a rich historical significance but also offers an intriguing twist for those with a curiosity for the paranormal. The fort features a museum that delves into its storied past, showcasing artifacts and exhibits that bring history to life. Additionally, Fort William Henry is known for its haunted ghost tour, a spine-tingling experience that explores the eerie legends and ghostly tales associated with the fort. Although the tour was closed during our visit, the thought of exploring its dimly lit corridors and hearing chilling stories of restless spirits would surely appeal to anyone fascinated by the supernatural. I’ll definitely be visiting again to experience one of these spooky tours.
After dinner, we explored the town and stumbled upon Christie’s On the Lake, a lively bar down an alleyway. The atmosphere was vibrant, with live music and friendly locals. It was a fun way to end the day, and I loved meeting new people and soaking in the local flavor. If you’re in the area, definitely stop at Christie’s.
Our third day in Lake George began with a boat cruise on Lake George Steamboat Company’s Lac Du Saint Sacrement, hosted by the Albany-Upstate New York club of Skål International USA. Skål is an international organization that brings together tourism professionals to promote global tourism and friendship. It was inspiring to meet so many individuals passionate about tourism while enjoying the incredible views of Lake George. I even had the chance to steer the boat, which was a truly memorable experience.
Before departing the area, we spent some time at the hotel pool, soaking up the sun and playing life-size chess. It was a relaxing way to unwind after a few days of non-stop adventure. We also explored the village, wandering through smaller shops and observing children riding on the merry-go-round. For lunch, we stopped at The Lagoon, where I had the best pizza and chicken wings. It was the perfect meal to conclude our exploration of the charming town.
Our journey home was smooth, thanks to Amtrak. This trip exemplified how easy it is to travel from New York City to anywhere in the Empire State and the Adirondacks. The convenience and comfort of rail travel make exploring these beautiful destinations seamless and enjoyable.
